The student travel grants are limited and cover partial local expenses only. The decisions will be made during the spring after fixing the summer school budget.

The grants will be primarily targeted for supporting female students, but all students can apply. The priority will be given to the student applicants presenting their work at the student sessions.

Send a short application e-mail to Camilla Hollanti, cajoho [at] utu [dot] fi, stating the following things:

-name, age, sex, institute, degrees

-how many years of PhD studies you have completed by the time of the summer school

-if you are a master level student, shortly describe your future research plans and give a date you will graduate (approximately)

-state whether you will submit a paper for the student sessions, and under which of the three mini-course topics it best suits for

-state any other possible resources you have for covering the expenses

-any other facts that you think that may affect our decision.

Regards,

The summer school will be organized on June 22-27, 2009 at the University of Turku, Finland.

PhD students in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, mathematics education or history of mathematics from the Nordic countries are invited to participate in a summer school in mathematics organized by the European Women in Mathematics (EWM).

The summer school is especially aimed at encouraging female students and researchers in their early careers, but we also warmly welcome male students. Students outside the Nordic countries, post-docs or advanced undergraduates thinking of PhD studies are also invited to attend.

The program of the meeting is broad and will be of interest for students working in different research areas. Mini-courses will give an introduction and an overview over three chosen topics of general interest from different areas of mathematics. They will be aimed at all students with a general mathematical background, yet come to touch questions of current research. Internationally recognized mathematicians will give the mini-courses and special lectures. The participants are invited to contribute to workshops and seminars with their own presentations.

The summer school is partially funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Otto A. Malm Foundation, Nokia, Oskar Öflund Foundation, Finnish Centre of Exellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research, and the Turku Centre for Computer Science (TUCS), Finland, in an attempt to encourage greater participation of women in mathematical research. Other sponsors include the University of Turku, Google, and the European Mathematical Society (EMS).

Besides the scientific program there will be an opportunity to meet professional mathematicians for discussions. Several social events and one excursion will be held. The summer school starts at 10 am on Monday, June 22, and ends at 3 pm on Saturday, June 27.

Scientific program

A number of well-established mathematicians from different countries will be main speakers in the summer school. They will give three mini-courses and a few more specialized 60-minutes lectures. Ample time will be allowed for participants to share ideas and make new contacts, and informal sessions facilitating such interaction will be encouraged. The scientific program is planned in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the European Mathematical Society.

Invited speakers (preliminary, changes possible):

All participants are strongly encouraged to attend seminars where they will have an opportunity to present their results, research projects or intended research areas. This is an important part of the summer school providing a chance for students to show and exchange ideas in mathematics. Depending on the number of interested participants, we may have to make a selection based on a reviewing process.

Accommodation

We have a preliminary booking for a few low budget beds and rooms at the university guesthouse Villa Hortus and at the B&B Tuure. There are also many other options you can choose from.
